How to avoid scams when buying a used jumping castle online

The best second-hand deals are private sales — but online classifieds also attract chancers. The good news: a handful of simple rules will keep you safe. None of them are complicated; scammers just count on you skipping them.

The golden rule: see it inflated, in person, before you pay

Almost every scam falls apart at this one step. A real seller with a real castle will happily set it up for you to view. If someone won’t let you see it inflated in person before money changes hands, walk away — no matter how good the price.

Never pay before you collect

• No deposits to “hold” it for a castle you haven’t seen.
• No upfront EFT, eWallet or instant payment to a stranger before collection.
• Be very wary of “I’ll courier it to you — just pay first.” That’s the classic classifieds scam. Pay when you collect and inspect, in person.

Red flags

• The price is far below the going rate — a good used castle is 40–60% of new (see the price guide). Suspiciously cheap is suspicious.
• The seller won’t take a phone call, only texts.
• They’re “away,” relocating or overseas and can’t meet — but will happily “arrange transport.”
• Pressure and urgency: “another buyer is coming, pay a deposit now.”
• They won’t send extra photos or a quick video of it inflated.
• They dodge basic questions a real owner would know — how old it is, the blower size, why they’re selling.

Quick checks that catch most scams

• Phone the seller and talk. Ask about the castle’s age, size, blower and reason for selling. Scammers get vague fast.
• Reverse-image-search the photos. If the same pictures show up on other sites, they’ve been lifted.
• Meet safely. View and collect at the seller’s home or a public place in daylight, and take someone with you.
• Pay on collection — cash, or an EFT that actually reflects before you load up — and keep the proof.
