What size jumping castle do I need?

The right size castle comes down to three things: the space you have, the ages of the kids, and how many will bounce at once. Here’s how to get all three right — with real South African castle dimensions.

Start with your space

Before you fall for a particular castle, measure where it will stand. You need the castle’s own footprint plus clearance all around for anchoring, the blower, and kids climbing on and off.

• Add about 1 m of clear, flat ground on every side of the castle’s footprint. A 3.75 m × 4 m castle therefore needs roughly 5.75 m × 6 m of usable space.
• Check overhead. Most standard castles stand about 2.6 m tall — taller with a roof or slide. Keep well clear of branches, washing lines, patio edges and, above all, power lines.
• Mind the access. A rolled castle is bulky and heavy; you need about a 1 m-wide path to carry or trolley it to the spot.
• Flat and clear. Level ground with no sharp stones, taps, sprinklers or tree stumps under the groundsheet.

Match the castle to the age group

Size isn’t just about square metres — it’s about who’s bouncing. Toddlers need low walls and a gentle unit; older kids get bored of a small bouncer fast.

How many kids at once?

Every commercial castle is marked by its maker with a maximum number of users, worked out from its bouncing area and the age and size of the users — this is part of the SANS 54960 safety standard. Stick to that number. As a rule of thumb:

• Bigger children take up far more room than toddlers, so the same castle safely holds many fewer 10-year-olds than 4-year-olds.
• Group by size and rotate turns — never mix toddlers and big kids at the same time.
• If it looks crowded, it is: pull a few out. Most bounce injuries are collisions between kids, not the castle itself.

The “default” sizes in South Africa

• Tight garden or small party: a 3 m × 3.3 m standard castle fits most suburban lawns.
• The all-rounder: the 3.75 m × 4 m medium castle is the workhorse — the size most rental operators buy first and most parties book.
