Planning a kids’ party with a jumping castle

A jumping castle is the centrepiece of the party — and a little planning is the difference between a smooth, safe day and a stressful one. Here’s a simple checklist to get it right.

Before the day

• Book early. October to January is peak party season in South Africa and good operators book out — sort it a couple of weeks ahead.
• Pick the right size. Match the castle to your space and the kids’ ages — a toddler unit for little ones, something bigger with a slide for older kids. Our size guide walks through it.
• Measure your space. You need the castle’s footprint plus about a metre of clear, flat ground all around, clear overhead (no branches or power lines), and a power point within reach.

On the day

• Set up before guests arrive so it’s ready and anchored when the kids get there.
• Assign a supervisor. One responsible adult should watch the castle the whole time it’s in use — not just be nearby.
• Lay down the rules: shoes off, no food, drinks or sharp objects on the castle, group kids by size (toddlers and big kids take turns, never together), and don’t overload it.
• Plan for the weather. South African summer means sun and afternoon storms — have shade and water for hot days, and know when it’s too windy or wet to use (everyone off in strong wind or rain).

Safety basics

• Check the operator has anchored every corner properly — this is what keeps the castle down in a gust.
• Keep the blower dry and its lead out of the way of running feet.
• Have basic first-aid and drinking water on hand. Most bounce bumps are kids colliding, so watch the numbers.
